Meany PTSA News 10/6/17

Board nominations due today!

If you haven't already nominated yourself to be a Meany PTSA Board member, now is the time! Our school community will benefit from your input and leadership. All nominations are due today, October 6. Learn more at and contact Christina Merkelbach with your self-nomination.

Pizza & Parents was a hit

Thank you everyone who came to the Meany PTSA's "Pizza & Parents" event before Curriculum Night on Tuesday. We enjoyed getting to know you better, and look forward to more opportunities to connect. Special thanks to Pagliacci's and Trader Joe's for their donations of delicious pizza and refreshments.

Safety alert

We've heard reports of Meany Middle students having some close calls while navigating our busy neighborhood streets. Please remind your student to use crosswalks, even if it means going a block or two out of the way. Students should always be alert and careful when walking or cycling to school, and pay attention to all lanes of traffic. Let's help keep our kids safe by modeling and reinforcing good safety habits!

Library volunteers still needed

Calling all book lovers! Shelly Macer, Meany's awesome librarian, needs a few more interested parents to help in the library. Activities include shelving, straightening, display setup, poster creation, checking books in/out, special events support, and more — all in the beautiful new Meany library. If you're interested and able to help on a regular basis (ideally every other week), please contact Ms. Macer to discuss details.

The Budget Committee needs your input!

The PTSA is in the process of revising the 2017–2018 budget so it reflects the interests of our school and family community and is supported by a thoughtful fundraising strategy. As required by WSPTA bylaws, a budget committee is working with staff and PTSA chairs and volunteers to recommend a budget on October 12. We want to hear from you what kinds of budget items you believe are important: please complete this survey and return to the school office with your student. Paper copies will also be available at Curriculum Night. Please contact Anne Friedlander with questions or if you'd like to be part of the budget committee.

Special Education parent group

Do you have a student with an IEP or 504, or are you requesting one? Are you a parent who would like to learn more about special education, gain a deeper understanding of Meany's wonderful diversity, or become an ally to special education kids and families? Consider joining the Meany Special Ed parent group. Casual meetings once a month will facilitate conversations about the challenges and frustrations, joys and triumphs, processes and paperwork involved in raising special kids — and how to foster inclusivity in our diverse school culture. The first meeting will be October 11 at 6:30 pm in the Meany Middle School Library. Please contact Lori Hiltz to RSVP or with any questions.
