Taste of Meany Potluck

Families, please join us for the inaugural 'Taste of Meany' multicultural potluck dinner on Thursday, October 24th from 5:00-7:00 pm in the cafeteria!

Please bring a dish to share that’s important to your family, whether it represents your culture or is simply one of your family’s favorite dishes. Feel free to label your dish with country of origin and/or why it’s important to your family!

Donations of non-perishable foods/snacks for our Counseling Department are also welcome.

Please contact the organizers, Meghan Dort Lackey (Events Chair) and Linda Moy (Community Building Chair), if you have questions or would like to help with this event.

Curriculum Night Recap

We had a great turnout at school for Curriculum Night this past Tuesday! Staff and parents enjoyed a yummy assortment of pizza in the Meany Cafe beforehand sponsored by the Meany PTSA. Zeek's Pizza on 19th gave us a neighborhood discount again this year — THANK YOU, Zeek's!

As you were making your way to your student's classes, hopefully you noticed some of the colorful wall displays and also the amazing collaborative art pieces in the halls done by Mr. Richardson's art students

Many teachers did short PowerPoint presentations or handed out materials in their classrooms. If you were not able to attend, feel free to contact your student's teachers via email and they can send you a copy of their presentation. You can find staff emails on the Meany website, or if you login to the Source.

PTA Reflections Arts Competition

CALLING ALL CREATIVE STUDENTS!
October 30th is the deadline for entering the 2019-2020 National PTA “Reflections” Arts Contest!
You do not need to be taking art or music class to enter.

Entries should reflect the theme Look Within.

Students may enter original work in any of six categories:

  • visual art (2D or 3D)

  • photography

  • literature

  • music composition

  • film/video production

  • dance choreography

An optional “special artist” category is available to students who qualify under ADA regulations. Full rules are on the WA State PTA’s Reflections info page

Winners in this round will advance to a citywide Grades 6-8 competition, which includes showing your work in an art show at Seattle Center. There’s a chance to reach the statewide and national rounds. Last year two Meany students were state finalists and a few Meany students received honorable mentions!

Entry forms will be available in the Main Office and in Mr. Richardson's art room next week!

Stage Club / Drama Club

The Meany Stage Club has been meeting on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school from 4:00 - 5:30 pm, working on the school Talent Show (performance will be in November before Thanksgiving).

In December, we'll hold auditions for the school MusicalJames and the Giant Peach. Rehearsals for the musical will begin in January, from 4:00 - 6:00 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and the show will run the last weekend of April and the first weekend of May.

We had a great start to our Drama program last year (see photos from our production of The Lion KingJr.), as we built community, witnessed star talent, and had a whole lot of fun. Please come give Stage Club/Drama Club a try!

Registration packets for Stage Club are available in the main office. Please contact Mr. Finney if you have any questions.

Yearbook Club

Would you like to be part of creating Meany's 2019-2020 yearbook? Yearbook club is a great way to make friends, be creative, and produce something the whole school is proud of.

Yearbook Club will meet on Tuesdays after school from 4:00 - 5:00 pm — the first meeting will be October 15th. There are only 15 spots available, so get your forms in ASAP.

Questions? Please contact Ms. Marshall and Ms. St. George

Dumbledore's Army - Harry Potter Club

This club is open to any Meany student who loves Harry Potter or who wants to learn more about it. Everyone is welcome! Meetings are on Thursdays from 3:45 - 4:30 pm in Room 6. Please contact Ms. Kammel with any questions.

LGBTQ+ Club

The LGBTQ+ Club mission statement is "...to create a safe place and community for LGBTQ+ students and help people organize against homophobia at school."

The group is led by Mrs. Frey and Ms. Justine and meets on Fridays from 3:45 - 4:30 pm in Room 29. (First meeting was on 9/20)

Dungeons and Dragons / Magic The Gathering Club

Do you love escaping to other fantastical worlds? Have a flair for the dramatic and want to work on your improv skills? Or do you simply want a fun place to goof off and have a good time on Thursday afternoons? Maybe you watched Stranger Things and thought, "That weird game they are playing looks awesome!"

Whether you play every week of have never even heard of it, Dungeons and Dragons is for EVERYONE. Come join Mr. Dunning in Room 9 on Thursdays after school to have a blast telling stories and battling dragons.

Ski Bus - Registration Info

We're excited for the 3rd annual Friends of Meany Ski Bus. Below is the general information. If after reading it you still have questions please contact Webbski Ski and Snowboard School (info@webbski.com, 206-782-5641) or parent volunteer coordinator, John Sullivan (206jjs@gmail.com). We are still looking for parent chaperones!

*     *     *     *     *     *
Times and Dates:  The ski bus leaves immediately after school on 6 consecutive Fridays from January-February. The bus returns to Meany between 10:30 and 11:00 pm. Most students bring their ski gear to school on Friday mornings. We will have a room available for storage.

Cost:  There are two options: 1) Transportation only or 2) Transportation and lessons

Ski rentals and lift tickets are NOT included. Most people choose to purchase a season pass instead of buying individual lift tickets. Season prices vary depending on the student's age and options that are chosen. A slightly discounted rate is available through Webbski, the organization who runs our ski bus program. Season passes must be purchased by December 15.

Registration:  Registration forms will be available in the main office at Meany next week. You must complete the registration form and mail it to Webbski with a check. Unfortunately, no online registration is available. Registration should be mailed in by November 30.

Please send an email to John Sullivan once you have registered so we can keep track of the number of students.

Student Expectations: Please understand that participation in the ski bus program takes a certain level of independence. While there are 2-3 chaperones on the bus each week helping out as much as they can, students must be able to function on their own once they arrive at the mountain.

Students are also asked to ski in groups with a minimum of 2 other students. The students involved last year did a great job and we are expecting things to go even more smoothly this year. Students who are not able to follow the program rules will lose their right to participate and will not receive a refund.

Weather and cancellations: If a ski bus is cancelled due to weather or pass closure, Webbski will do their best to make up that date on a Friday in late February or early March. However, no refunds will be given.

Note: Ski Bus is not a school or PTSA-sponsored activity. Fees are charged by the provider.
