Meany PTSA Weekly Newsletter 2/1/2019

Audition for Meany’s Spring Musical

Do you have a child who likes to sing, dance or act? The Stage Club’s next production will be “The Lion King” at the end of April and beginning of May. Come try out for the show!

We hope to attract many participants, and we need technical members to work backstage as well (if singing or acting is not your thing). Interested students should pick up an information packet/permission slip/contract in the Main Office.

Rehearsals/auditions began on Tuesday, January 29 and will continue through February (Tuesdays and Thursdays after school from 4:00-5:30 pm). Students should wear comfortable/athletic clothing that they can move in for auditions. Join our ensemble!

Please contact Mr. Finney if you have any questions after reading over the information packet.

Honor Roll Reception

Meany will be having an event to celebrate our students who made the Honor Roll for first semester! Students make the Honor Roll based on their GPA. There are two tiers for the Honor Roll: 1st Honors requires a GPA of 3.5 and above; 2nd Honors requires a GPA for 3.0 to 3.49.

Originally an Honor Roll Reception was scheduled for the evening of Feb. 6th, but that date had to be postponed. The staff are working on finding a new date — it will either be an evening reception or a daytime assembly. Stay tuned for an announcement from Ms. Oatis with more details!

Ultimate Frisbee Registration Deadline is This Friday!

Ultimate frisbee spring season registration forms are available in the Main Office. Meany Spring Sports - Co-ed Track, Girls Volleyball, Boys Soccer

A few parents and students have been asking about when spring sports will begin at Meany. (Note: Ultimate Frisbee is on a separate schedule since it is a club sport in the spring.) Spring sports begin in early March. Mr. Montgomery, Meany’s Athletic Director, is still finalizing coaches and practice schedules for the teams. Information and registration packets will be available in the Main Office later this month (likely after mid-winter break). Here is a link to forms required by SPS to participate.

Please contact Mr. Montgomery with any questions.

Apply to be a CityWorks Artist at Coyote Central!

Do you want to make art for something bigger than yourself? Are you 13-16 years old? Would you describe yourself as an artist, a creative, or someone who thinks outside the box? Are you a hard worker? Would you like to see your art out in the community?

CityWorks is a public art program at Coyote Central in which young people create public art for community organizations. Each project is designed and created by 6-8 students with the help of an experienced public artist. Each project takes about 20-30 hours of work over the course of a few weeks/weekends. Every project is different, depending on what the artists come up with (that’s you!)

To learn more, pick up an information packet/application in the Main Office at Meany. Check out these CityWorks past projects

Classroom Volunteers Needed

So far only a few folks have signed up to help support our teachers by assisting in the classroom. We have a need for MANY more volunteers. Do you have an hour or two to spare once a week? We have volunteer opportunities in math class, ELL, world languages class, special ed classes, homework club, and in the library, and we are expecting more assistance requests from teachers as the semester progresses.

If interested, please contact PTSA coordinators Angela Sorkin and/or Jean Hua. They will work to match you up with a classroom in need.

All on-campus volunteers must complete a Seattle Public Schools short online in-school volunteer training and background check. Visit the SPS Volunteering page to learn more and complete the training. It will take at least 1-2 weeks to hear back from the district about your application, so we encourage you to get started as soon as possible. To learn more about volunteering with SPS, please also take a look at the SPS Volunteer Handbook.
