Meany PTSA Newsletter 5/10/2019

SAVE THE DATE - Meany Art Festival - Friday, May 31

Meany Middle School families and friends, please join us at school on Friday evening, May 31st from 5:00-8:00 pm for the Meany Art Festival

The PTSA is working with Meany’s Art teacher, Mr. Richardson, to put together this fun event at the end of the month which will showcase some amazing artwork produced by Meany students this year. Last year Meany held a similar event at Optimism Brewery (photos here), but this year we are excited to be able to hold the event at our school and have both 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional artwork on display.

We will need volunteers to help mount artwork and also to hang/display art the day before and day of the event. More details coming soon. Please contact Lara Kreyenhagen and Amber Oleson if you’d like to help out.

Volunteer Grant Writer Needed

Did you know Meany has an incredible outdoor garden courtyard area that was not included in the school’s remodel and has not been revamped since 1960!?

Meany teachers, along with parent volunteer team Anna Davidson (7th grade) and Jennifer Guthrie (6th grade), have big visions of innovative outdoor educational space for all teachers and students to utilize for everything from gardening and outdoor installation art projects to environmental science opportunities, and are seeking a parent volunteer grant writer to help acquire one or several grants to help make this happen. We have secured initial funding to start the project and have the Landscape Architect plans drawn and approved by SPS and the school administration. We now need your help!

We are looking for a parent volunteer to help secure grant money for this very fundable project. Do you have writing skills? Are you passionate about outdoor education, gardening, and the arts? Are you looking for a way to help make Meany the most innovative school it can be? This position is an excellent flexible volunteer position that can be done from home and does not need to be an official PTSA Board position. No prior grant writing experience necessary.

Please join us in helping to create an incredible outdoor learning space which will benefit all students at Meany for years to come!

If interested in this position, please reach out to the PTSA Courtyard Garden liaison, Anna Davidson or the PTSA Board.

Order Your Meany Middle School Yearbook

Paper order forms are available in the main office, or you may order the yearbook online through your parent Source account with SchoolPay. Order now through June 15th for a discounted price of $20 per yearbook. After that date the cost goes up to $25.

Please turn in completed forms to the Main Office with either cash or a check made out to Meany Middle School.

Yearbooks will be distributed during the last week of school

Please contact Ms. Marshall with any questions.

The Meany PTSA needs YOU

We are recruiting now for board and committee members for next year. Getting involved with the PTSA is a great way to help build community and meet other parents, while also having an opportunity to make a real impact on our school. In elementary school parents often connect on the playground before and after school, but in middle school it can be harder to make those connections. Being involved in the PTSA also means that you will really know the ins and outs of the school (more than a typical pre-teen/teenager will tell you!). There are many ways to get involved with varying levels of time commitment, and many roles can be shared.

Here are some of the roles we are hoping to fill for next year:

  • Co-Treasurer

  • Website Editor

  • Events Co-Chair

  • 6th Grade BLT Rep (incoming parent)

  • Special Ed Parent Liaison

  • Classroom Volunteer Coordinator

  • Backpack Brigade Assistant (assisting the Counselor)

  • Grant Writer for Donations (Counselor has a list of easy to apply for grants)

To learn more, please join us at the Meany PTSA Board Meeting next Tuesday, May 14th at 7:00 pm in the Meany library. Everyone is welcome!

We will give an update on our fundraising this year through the Meany PTSA Annual Fund, and we will also be finalizing our proposed PTSA budget for next year (the budget will be voted on at the PTSA General Meeting on May 23).

Questions? Please contact Jen Emrich, Meany PTSA Co-President.

Staff Appreciation Week - Thank You!

Big thank you to everyone who helped make this week special for our teachers and staff by volunteering your time and bringing in food and other treats. Special shout out to Anna Finkenzeller who did a fabulous job of organizing everything for the week. The Meany staff were very appreciative and grateful! See a few photos here.

Smarter Balanced Testing Continues Next Week

Next week students will have Math assessments on May 13, 14, 16 and 17.  The week of May 20th will be make-ups for students who have missed any tests during the first eight days of testing.

See the parent letter and more details about the full testing schedule here.

Scheduling Meetings with Teachers at School

Just a friendly reminder that any meetings with teachers must be scheduled in advance (we do not allow drop-in meetings).

If you wish to schedule a meeting with one of your child’s teachers, please contact that teacher by calling the main office (the office staff can connect you to the teacher’s voicemail) or by emailing them directly.

Once you have made an appointment, please check in with the main office upon arrival. Meetings will take place in one of the main office conference rooms.

Grade Level Reps

Do you have a school related question or concern? In an effort to improve communication within the Meany school and family community this year, the PTSA has appointed a parent from each grade at the school to be a point person. Our three parent Grade Level Reps this year are also on Meany’s BLT (Building Leadership Team).

Please feel free to reach out to them with any questions or concerns and they will do their best to help find the answers that you need! Grade Level Reps will receive comments or questions and either provide or direct parents to answers or pass on concerns to school administrators.
